We’ve performed at Mt Cook School Galas quite a few times over the years, as a thank you for their generosity in allowing us to use their school hall on CubaDupa weekends for many a last-minute mass Batucada bloco rehearsal. We were delighted therefore to be asked back once again to perform at the Mt Cook School 150th birthday celebration.

What an occasion! And what a history! Well done Mt Cook School – you aren’t showing your age at all. Such a brilliant inner-city multicultural community-centered establishment.

Those of us who got there in good time for our gig were lucky enough to see some of the kids’ shows in the playground – teeny little dancers doing their thing, a whole host of miniature violinists – it was wonderful to watch them, and to mingle with the esteemed birthday party guests, many of whom spent their formative years at this great school. Including some of our own…

Our gig was towards the end of the afternoon, and we had a good crowd of parents and kids to watch our drumming and dancing. For our final encore piece we invited the bravest amongst them to join us on the dancefloor – some of whom did, with great enthusiasm.

What a lovely afternoon, and such a good cause. Happy birthday Mt Cook School and congratulations on your sesquicentennial!
