Festival of Carnivale – dancing and drumming in the rain
It was cold and wet for our Cuba Mall gig, which was a pity, as Cuba Street is something of a spiritual home for Wellington Batucada and we love playing there.
So cold and wet, in fact, that our normally staunch dancers ditched their flimsy costumes and performed in their normal streetwear instead.
So cold and wet, in fact, that this may well go down in the Batucada archives as one of our briefest appearances ever – not much longer than 10 minutes by all accounts.

I was here for this!
My husband and I were in Wellington for 3 nights as part of a round the world backpacking trip and had no idea what was going on, when this random group started playing a funky samba beat in the middle of the street!
It may have been a miserable cold day (and I remember, it was!), but to this day I remember the energy and incredible sound created by your group. It was a highlight of my whole round the world trip!
Hi Rebecca!
I’m so pleased that we cheered up a miserable cold day for you – thanks so much for your comment. It’s always wonderful to hear from people who randomly encountered us and liked what we were doing. That’s what it’s all about!
