A purple day at the races
Relay For Life is an inspiring community experience that gives everyone a chance to celebrate cancer survivors and carers; remember loved ones lost to cancer; and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work of the Cancer Society. It’s a great cause, and one we’re honoured to have been invited to play for once again.
It’s an event full of energy and emotion. Whether you have a connection to someone who has been or is going through cancer, or you just want to make a difference – Relay For Life is for you. The event was again held at Trentham Racecourse – and we were happy to be back after last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID-19.
We began with a bit of a warmup outside near the green room, and then made our way to the stage area to hear the speeches. Relay For Life starts with a Celebration Lap, lead by people who currently have or previously had cancer, and people who have supported or are currently supporting someone on their cancer journey. Once the Celebration Lap was complete, it was our job to lead the hundreds of fund-raising participants around the circuit for the first time, as they begin their 24-hour relay.
This year’s event had an additional layer of meaning for the Batucada whānau, as cancer has reached in and touched one of our own. We were glad to be able to come together in a circle before playing, a moment to cherish those we love who are going through this challenging journey, and to remember those who have gone before.
